East Suffolk Alumni Association Awards $7000 in Scholarships

to Six High School Graduates for 2018

​

The East Suffolk High School Alumni Association, Inc. (ESHSAA) awarded $7000 in scholarships to six recent graduates from three Suffolk public schools and one private school. The ESHSAA scholarships are funded by alumni, supporters, and friends of East Suffolk Alumni, and the Joyce A. Artis Memorial Scholarships are funded through donations from the estate and supporters of the late Joyce A. Artis who was a 1966 graduate of John F. Kennedy High School.

The following four students received the ESHSAA Scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each:

 

James Mathias Bile’, a 2018 graduate from Kings Fork High School with a G.P.A. of 3.1, received a $1,000 ESH Alumni Association Scholarship to attend Old Dominion University. His field of study is Criminal Justice. He is the son of Kenitra Ledbetter Bile’.

 

Madelyn G. Carr, a 2018 graduate of Lakeland High School with a G.P.A. of 3.9, received a $1,000 ESH Alumni Association Scholarship to attend Longwood University. Her field of study is Therapeutic Recreation. She is the daughter of Morris and Melissa Carr.

 

Dezmen Imani Howard, a 2018 graduate of Nansemond River High School with a G.P.A. of 3.3, received a $1,000 ESH Alumni Association Scholarship to attend Winston Salem State University. His field of study is Computer Science. He is the son of Donna Askew.

Dominic Mercedes Claude, a 2018 graduate of The Boston Arts Academy, Boston, Massachusetts, with a G.P.A. of 4.7, received the $1,000 W.L. Turner Memorial Scholarship to attend the Berklee College of Music. He is the son of Monet Ledbetter Claude.

 

The following two students received $1500 from the Joyce A. Artis Memorial Scholarship Fund:

 

Janelle Keionna Mabry, a 2018 graduate of Nansemond River High School with a G.P.A. of 4.4, received a $1500 Joyce A. Artis Memorial Scholarship to attend Hampton University. Her field of study is Electrical Engineering. She is the daughter of Travis and Michelle Mabry. She is also a descendant of Michele Yolanda Wilson.

Myles S. Copeland, a 2018 graduate of Kings Fork High School with a G.P.A. of 3, 5, received a $1500 Joyce A. Artis Memorial Scholarship to attend Norfolk State University. His field of study is Nursing Anesthetist. He is the son of Bruce and Allison Ledbetter Copeland. He is also a descendant of Miriam Sears.

​

Each of the six scholarship recipients demonstrated exceptional performance throughout their high school career. They were judged in five categories: Academic Achievement, Original Essay, Community Service, Extracurricular Activities, and Financial Need.

 

The 2019 scholarship applications will be available in the schools’ guidance offices and the East Suffolk Recreation Center in February 2019.
